My name is Nick Laramee and I am currently a senior public health major at the University of South Carolina with a minor in psychology. Throughout my time at the University, I have been involved in a variety of organizations and research that has helped me prepare for a career in public health. I plan on graduating in May 2019 and will move to Alaska shortly after graduating to work for Allen Marine Tours as a naturalist/narrator. In October, I want to join the Peace Corp as a health educator in Ghana or South Africa. When I return, I plan to pursue a master in epidemiology through a public health graduate school so I can continue to fight health disparities and infectious disease in third world countries.
My e-portfolio was created for my Graduation with Leadership Distinction in Global Learning. It showcases the insights I gained during my global learning experience in the Czech Republic and within the classroom that will help me as a public health professional. By studying abroad, I gained insights that are far more valuable than anything I could have learned by only studying at the University of South Carolina. This is important, because I will be able to use everything I learned in my future endeavors, including the Peace Corp. My three key insights were developed as I reflected on my within- and beyond-the-classroom experiences. They are: “Maintaining an Unbiased View”, “Alternative Solutions to Healthcare”, and “Igniting the Fire”. My leadership section is an HIV/AIDS intervention program that target a specific population in Richland County of Columbia, SC. Through my experiences I have learned that in order to provide unbiased, exceptional health care around the world, we must first spend time and learn in different cultures then our own to gain a unique global viewpoint. This will not only show us how to improve health in our own society, but how to communicate effectively and work together with others for the better of humanity. |
